The Barong Dance

Rosa Amalia, Indonesia

For someone this might be a normal village view in Bali, but for me is so rare yet amazing view, not only the photo itself but what the postcard represents. The famous Barong is a benevolent beast who chases bad influences.
And Rosa Amalia said that the people in the postcard are actually walking along with the barong, but they need to dance (which is most famous traditional dance in Bali) in order to “work the magic”.
Anyhow Bali is wonderful place for holiday – the beaches, small villages, cultures, food are the magnet for every holiday dream. Yes I knew that, but Rosa Amalia just reminded me of what I have missed so far 😅

Additional info – The Barong is an ancient mythological dance in Bali that represents a fight between good spirit and evil spirit. Barong is a mythological animal that represent the good spirit and Rangda is a mythological monster that represent the evil.
The dance is performed by highly trained local artists in an open air theatre. The Barong responds to Rangda’s use of magic to control and kill her to restore balance.
The main characters are:

Barong: The hero, a lion shaped creature, king of Good spirits
Rangda: The villain, a demon queen, a widow, leader of evils
Legong: Lady dancer , representing goodness, supporter of Barong.
